The Sheffield Star update their Facebook more or less hourly. The frequency of their posts allows the public to be up to date with occurred/occurring events nearby.

Another great thing about Facebook is that it allows the audience to interact by liking, sharing and commenting on posts. This is a great way for the Sheffield Star to get some feedback or opinions that could raise heated discussions between other users. My own infographics

I created my own survey based on which social media platforms and which ones people use most. I also asked for their gender and which age group they fitted in.

For my FMP, I will be using Facebook as my main source of social media to publish my work. However, my work will be published on one of my WordPress blogs. I will be posting on Facebook and add links to my Facebook which will direct viewers to my blog.

I think Facebook is a great source of social media as so many people use it. It is brilliant to get your work acknowledged and allows people to give you feedback.

Other Media Organisations:

BBC News:

BBC News is a world wide source of news that features anything news based. Like other news organisations, they use a range of social media in order to interact with the public. The BBC use a short form across their social media that links to their website which is long form based. BBC news reports bigger news and more serious news that can effect a large amount of people rather than a local source of news such as the Sheffield Star.

Facebook:

The BBC news seem to post on their Facebook daily and more or less hourly. This is a great way in order to maintain and keep the public up to date with the latest world wide news. On their Facebook page, they have a wide range of different media types such as photos, videos, links to further articles and live vlogging.

Twitter:

BBC News have so many different twitter accounts in order to limit their appealed audience. For example, there is an account for news based in the UK, worldwide news and breaking news. Focusing primarily on worldwide news, their account features short links with caption and photos that send them straight to the BBC News website where the  full article is presented. They have also managed to build up a massive following as the amount of followers they have on Twitter alone is 22.6M. The BBC News Twitter is updated at least hourly as they have updated their account 3 times in the last 10 minutes. As this specific account is for worldwide news, it will be updated more regularly rather than the Sheffield Star Twitter and the audience is much larger and wider.

Instagram:

Unlike the Sheffield Star, the BBC News use their Instagram so much more and post at least once a day. Instagram can be quite a difficult social media to use for news purposes but the BBC News seem to have done this really well by building up a following of 4.7M followers. Although Instagram is quite limited to photos, the BBC have managed to load singular photos, collages and videos with a lengthy caption including a short piece on the image/video shown. However, there are no links leading directly to an article which means this could be just a short way of updating and informing their audience. The stories and photos published on Instagram are also more positive stories rather than breaking news.

Overall, the BBC News do communicate and interact with their audience by using social media and allowing them to comment, share, like, tweet or retweet their articles in order for them to be more aware across the world.

The Daily Mail:

The Daily Mail is a tabloid that relies on social media to get across their news stories in the fastest way possible. To get the biggest possible reaction they often post videos or shocking headlines to attract people to their several pages whilst scrolling through their news feed. They use a mixture of short and long form content but tend to get the most interaction when posting short form like videos with bold and bright captions to capture attention.

Facebook:

The Daily Mail use Facebook as a way to engage with their audience and keep them updated on news across the world. On their Facebook page, they have different types of media such as photos, videos and written content. The feature links on their feed which then lead them to their official website of news. The Daily Mail use Facebook and update it at least once every hour in order to maintain their audience’s attention.

Twitter:

The Daily Mail Twitter is updated more frequent compared to Facebook as Twitter is a more instant platform of news and reaction. The Daily Mail have managed to build up a following of 2.19M. Again, unlike the Sheffield Star, the account is updated much more often as the audience is much larger and wider. They use Twitter by adding different types of media such as photos, videos, polls and links to the Daily Mail website.

Instagram:

Instagram is also used by the Daily Mail but isn’t as popular as the BBC News site. This is down to the Daily Mail being specifically a newspaper rather than a news station on the television. However, they have still managed to gain a decent following of 396k. The Daily Mail do still update their Instagram every day and do post multiple images ad videos throughout the day.

The Daily Mail do use all 3 types of social media as the BBC News do. However, the BBC News do seem to have a greater number of followers on each type of social media. I believe this is down the the Daily Mail being strictly a newspaper compared to the BBC News which is TV based. TV is much more popular than newspapers in this day and age so therefore will lead to news organisations that feature on TV, more popular to ones that don’t.
